How to Help Survivors and Victims of Iceland Volcano

A volcano on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula erupted that has started between Mt. Hagafell and Mt. Stóra Skógfell on Saturday, March 16, prompting evacuation of nearby Blue Lagoon and the town of Grindavik. This is the fourth eruption since December. Lava is flowing rapidly towards Grindavik, which was previously evacuated in January due to another eruption.

A state of emergency has been declared in the area. The eruption is considered to be the most powerful out of the four so far. Lava has reached the eastern defenses around Grindavik and biggest concern was the impact on infrastructure.

Helping the Victims of the Volcano

Apart from declaration of state of emergency and evacuation of Blue Lagoon, there have not been major updates . As The lagoon was evacuated earlier in March due to seismic activity, there is less chances of human casualties. However,  Iceland is one of the most active volcanic areas on the planet.

Hence the government and charitable organisations have  been prepared to help the possible communities and people affected by such recurring events in this volcanically active country located between the Greenland Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.

Immediate Support

In the aftermath of a volcanic eruption, the focus of first responders shifts towards Search and Rescue operations, where the primary goal is to locate and rescue individuals who may be stranded or injured due to the eruption. This phase is critical in ensuring the safety and well-being of those affected by the disaster, as prompt action can save lives and alleviate suffering.

Helping Affected People

Evacuation and Sheltering efforts are swiftly initiated to move people residing in impacted areas to safe zones. Temporary shelters are established to provide essential amenities such as housing, food, water, and sanitation facilities to those displaced by the eruption. This immediate response is crucial in safeguarding the affected population and meeting their basic needs during the crisis.

Long Term Support

Medical Care becomes a top priority post-eruption, with a focus on treating the injured and addressing respiratory issues caused by ash inhalation. Providing timely and effective medical assistance is essential in mitigating health risks and ensuring the well-being of individuals impacted by the volcanic activity. Collaborative efforts between healthcare professionals and emergency response teams play a vital role in delivering necessary care to those in need.
