History to International Women's Day

International women's day is a worldwide celebration made over the progress on issues surrounding women. These issues range from women's rights, gender equality, violence against women and discrimination to reproductive rights and equal pay. International women's day is believed to have originated in the early 1900’s in Europe and Northern America due to labor movements.

So, women's day is an over a century long commemoration observed in various ways all around the world. In some parts of the world, it is marked by protests, some countries celebrate progress and womanhood whereas some celebrate women humanitarian workers and raise awareness campaigns on issues pertaining to women.

Women volunteers in Childcare

Women volunteers across the world have selflessly dedicated themselves to taking care of children in need. Volunteers make sure that the child gets the attention and affection that they need in the early years of their life. The volunteers and caregivers are involved in activities ranging from arts, health, education to sports for the children.

Most societies still associate women as the primary caregiver and as a result prefer having women volunteers to take care of them. The way to change this social norm is to generate more awareness in the field of volunteering and change the perception of people.

Participation of Women for Conservation Works

Women’s participation in every society has a huge role in the conservation and protection of the environment. However, due to disproportionate division of resources and lack of educational support, in a lot of rural communities that are closer to protected conservation areas, women were significantly left out.

However, with the help of volunteers and humanitarian workers all around the world, this knowledge gap has significantly reduced. Women are over one half of the world. Thus, volunteer work is essential to help with the participation of local women in conservation work as well as increase in awareness of protected areas.

Climate Change and Role of Women

With persisting gender disparity across the world, the impact of social, environment and economical issues are disproportionate as well. In most developing societies, women are responsible to gather and produce food and water for the family. Climate change has created hurdles for women in these roles.

With the help of volunteers and humanitarian work women in every society can be given a chance to learn, adapt and develop plans to mitigate the effects of climate change. Awareness campaigns and training programs by volunteers to women on sustainable farming and environmental conservation will equip women with necessary skills and resources.

Women in Healthcare Services

According to the World Health Organization, even though women account for over 70% of the health care workers around the world 75% of the leadership positions in healthcare are held by men. While we appreciate the progress and participation of women in healthcare, on Women's day we have to recognize the existing gap in leadership position and gender discrimination.

Healthcare is one of the industries where women have been able to make the most impacts world wide. Women in medical and healthcare volunteer programs have contributed in disease prevention, awareness, assistance and counseling. Women have contributed to healthcare through these programs and at the same time earned the opportunity to learn from them.

Psychology Counseling and Role of Women

Psychology and women's rights movements have moved along together for centuries now. We cannot talk about women and psychology and forget to honor these women: Anna Freud, Mary Whiton Calkins, Mary Ainsworth, Karen Horney. They are all women who made noteworthy contributions in the field of psychology and fought for their rights and paved a path for 21st century women.

Now the field of psychology counseling is open for women to explore, learn, earn and leave their contributions to. This profession has helped to voice the mental health needs of women across the world. Currently, with almost 75% of psychology majors being women, it is time to push for a better economic, social and power balance as well.

Women Leadership in Global Volunteer Works

Globally, volunteer work has helped women in making progress across every field of work. The goal of women leadership roles in volunteer work is to challenge the social norms and status quo that has confined the boundaries of societies. As leaders, women will be better able to express the needs, issues and interest of communities that they belong to.

Especially in developing and rural communities, with women volunteers in leadership they can focus on the education, health care, and conservation of resources in their society. When women of these societies are given a skill and made aware about their rights, they can become more self-sufficient. This can be made possible with the help of training and awareness campaigns.

Increasing women inclusion in volunteering and humanitarian work

Just like in any other field, it is important that women receive equal opportunity and resources in the field of volunteering and humanitarian work. The inclusion of women in volunteering and humanitarian work can help to promote inclusiveness, empowerment, economic independence and self sufficiency.

Volunteering is the perfect place for women to earn a chance to learn while giving back to society. Traveling to a new place allows for a greater exchange of knowledge and skill sharing opportunities. Globally, women have testified to volunteering work making them feel empowered and satisfied.

Impact of Volunteering activities on gender equality

Participating in volunteering activities can help women develop their skills and increase opportunities and chances for them to engage in activities that will eventually help them grow. Similarly, volunteers also impact gender equality by generating awareness about reproductive health, assisting in campaigns, medical care, women's education and women's rights.

Importance of celebrating women's day

Although the progress made in the fields of technological, economical, social achievements women should be recognized and celebrated everyday, dedicating a specific day shifts the focus that is necessary. women's day is important to mark every year of how far we have come and aim and plan to achieve gender equality.

Conclusion: International women's day Special, Honoring All The Women Volunteers

As per the world's volunteerism report prepared by the United Nations, women across the globe volunteer slightly more than men around the world. On this day, we have to appreciate and recognize the efforts and sacrifices that these women have put in making the world a better place.

Volunteers and awareness programs can raise awareness on issues pertaining to women's rights and push the society towards a more sustainable, inclusive and equitable one.
