Brand Overview

LL Bean is an older company started in 1912 in Freeport, Maine, by Leon Leonwood Bean, from where the name LL Bean comes. Leonwood loves hunting trips, and he wanted to have waterproof boots to keep his feet dry during those trips. And from here, he started making waterproof boots, and later the brand expanded to other outdoor gear and casual wear.

While Patagonia is a younger company founded in 1973 by climber Yvon Chouinard, he built it for mountaineers, hikers, and it is currently successful in the mission.

Brand Core Values

LL Bean has always focused on comfort and affordability. They prioritise quality and comfort over design or looks.

On the other hand, Patagonia is focused on creating appealing and quality products with possible recycled gear. Their core values include recycled fabrics, fair trade certifications, and resale programs.

Product Design and Features Compared

Pockets, Linings, and Adjustability

Patagonia’s jackets lean toward sleek design. You’ll usually find two chest pockets, a few zippered compartments, and a polyester lining. It’s lightweight, functional, and great for layering.

LL Bean jackets are a little more old-school in the best way. You might find fleece linings for extra warmth, a hidden chest pocket for security, and adjustable hems that help lock in heat. Some models even offer four zippered pockets for added convenience.

Technical Materials and Innovation

Patagonia doesn't compromise when it comes to tech. Their jackets use materials like Nano Puff insulation, Gore-Tex waterproofing, and H2No shells. They even put products through something called the “ 24 Killer Wash” to test for durability.

Even LL Bean is not behind on it. Their down jackets use DownTek to repel water, PrimaLoft insulation to keep you warm in cold and damp conditions.

Fit and Comfort: LL Bean vs Patagonia

Jacket Fit

LL Bean jackets are a more relaxed fit. It is perfect if you like layering, or want comfort (doesn't care much about aesthetics).

Patagonia jackets are generally slim, but good enough for movement and high-intense outdoor activities. It gives a good feel, but sometimes women complain that they find it too tight around their shoulders or chest.

Sizing Differences

That slimness of Patagonia clearly makes a difference in sizing. As their items are closer to the body, some items like tops can feel smaller in size compared to what it is labelled. Here, for sizing, LL Bean winds.

Best for Lower Temperature

Both brands are great for cold weather. Patagonia items like Nano Puff, R1 fleece, and Tres 3-in-1 parka are great for handling such cold situations. And also the LL Bean Ultralight 850 Down Jacket, and the PrimaLoft Packaway Hoody are too warm and great to handle even too cold conditions.

Both brands use ripstop fabric, synthetic or down fill, and water repellent treats for better breathability and compressibility. Still, Patagonia is a little more adaptable in harsh conditions compared to LL Bean.

My Favourite LL Bean and Patagonia Items

The Ultralight 850 Down Jacket (one of the top sellers) and PrimaLoft Pakaway Hoody are my favourites.

  • Ultralight 850 Down jacket is price at $199 and it offers solid warmth, great for travel or backup layering.
  • I got PriimaLoft Packway Hoddy at a discounted price $139, one of the best sporty and warmth hoodies without being too heavy.

And in Patagonia, my all-time favourite includes Nano Puff, Tres 3-in-1 Parkha, Alpine Houdini sheel, and T1 fleece. These products are warm and perfect for layering.

Durability and Longevity

When it comes to durability, Patagonia leads one-sidedly. Many of the items last for 20+ years, plus their repair program makes them last even longer.

No doubt, LL Bean has provided the warmest clothes at an affordable rate, but when it comes to durability, it fails compared to Patagonia. Well, their product are great, the complain arise around zippers.

While there aren't enough complains about Patagonia zippers, you can find hundreds of complains about LL Bean zippers with a single Google search.

Sustainability

Again, Patagonia wins here. They are too focused on sustainability, and use organic cotton, recycled polyester and hemp. Plus, they have a resale ecosystem which keeps clothes out of landfills.

While LL Bean is not too focused on Sustainability, their primary focused is always to build long-lasting products at possible affordable rates.

Regional Popularity

Patagonia is popular in cities like San Francisco, Washington, DC, and NYC, where the quality and aesthetic matter more than prices.

LL Bean is popular Northeast, especially in cities like Boston, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. For many, this may be outdated, but some found it a classic charm.

Price vs Value

When we consider price, LL Bean is the winner. Their many jackets starting from $70 and going maximum to $250, while Patagonia begins from $100 and can go up to $350.

But price doesn't tell the whole story. When it comes to value, again, Patagonia wins. Even being expensive, their longevity makes them cheaper on per per-day use.

My Final Verdict - Patagonia vs LL Bean

For me, the winner is Patagonia. Yes, it is a bit expensive, but their design, quality make it worth of money. If you are hikers, climbers or skiers and money doesn't matter too much, going with Patagonia.

But if you want a warmth everyday winter wear within budget, then LL Bean can be the best choice. You will never complain about their comfort and warmth, but you may find their design old-fashioned.
