Sri Lanka Buddhist Monastery Volunteer Program

Sri Lanka is an intriguing island to visit. The Indian Ocean's pearl-shaped nation is a biodiverse and agriculturally important region. Sri Lanka entices travelers with its endless beaches, old ruins, kind people, elephants in plenty, rolling waves, low rates, intriguing trains, famous tea, and delicious cuisine. This island crams an astounding range of things to see into its little footprint. The Indian Ocean laps the coastline, which is flanked by gorgeous – and often refreshingly unspoilt – beaches, while the mainland offers a diverse range of scenery, ranging from wildlife-rich lowland rainforests to foggy highlands covered in tea plantations.

Volunteering has provided the way for many other experiences, including living in a Buddhist monastery. Living at a Buddhist monastery may provide you with a sense of tranquility, productivity, and compassion. While in the monastery, you may participate in daily activities such as prayer, household labor, and even teaching English to the monks who live there. You will be able to immerse yourself in the tranquility and serenity of their home while learning about their lifestyle and discipline and contributing any expertise you may have. This exchange of information and culture exemplifies the actual meaning of volunteering at a Buddhist monastery.

Volunteer’s Roles Responsibilities and Activities

This location is a Buddhist monk training center, with many of the monks having enrolled at a young age. They are raised in a rigorous VINAYA (disciplined environment) where they aren't supposed to move. They are required to stroll with focus, paying little attention to the outside world, and they are expected to laugh loudly, clap hands, or bounce about. They are prepared for skilled Monks who have undergone rigorous training themselves. Morning meditation and prayers will be observed or participated in (depending on the monastery's rules). You'll teach the monks English and assist the monastery's children with their homework. You’ll teach them new skills, share your experiences, and learn about theirs. You'll help the monks with their everyday duties inside the monastery. During orientation, you will get all of the necessary information.

Arrival and Orientation

Our team will meet you at Katunayake's Bandaranaike International Airport and transport you to your community house or host family lodging. The rest of the day is free for you to relax and experience Sri Lanka's hospitality. You will formally meet your coordinators and fellow group members. You will learn more about Ecuador and your program at orientation. Later in your holiday, you'll go to Sri Lanka, a country known for its rich history and kindness.

Accommodation

The communal home may sleep 10 to 15 people. There is hostel-style group housing available, with gender-specific dormitory rooms. Group leaders have their own sleeping quarters. Wi-Fi is available, as well as eating and living facilities and indoor baths. Depending on the size of the event, a host family may also be selected. Our host families have been thoroughly screened, have been with us for several years, and come highly recommended by previous participants. Upgraded accommodations are available upon request.

Free Time Travel Activities in Galle

Galle, located in southern Sri Lanka, is well-known across Asia for its palm-fringed beaches and water sports such as surfing. It is a historic city with medieval mosques, churches, and fortifications. Galle's UNESCO World Heritage Site architecture represents Portuguese, Dutch, and British history vividly. Meanwhile, you may unwind and explore Galle. If this is your last day in the program, our staff will help you plan your next steps. Those that remain with the program will receive a two-day weekend to relax. Placements that last more than a week are handled in the same way. Monday through Friday, you'll be working on the project. Saturday and Sunday are completely free to explore.
