10 ChatGPT & AI Prompts Made My Trips Cheaper, Smarter, and Fun

AI is changing the way we used to live, think and even travel. Today, it's not about asking some random question or chatting just for fun; no, you can use AI to make your journey smoother and more organized.

I have been using AI for a long time now, and it helps me a lot to plan my trips. If you are a frequent traveler, I am sure you must have tried it. But do you know the right way to use AI to reach its full potential? Well, the potential of AI depends upon your input and prompts you feed.

Which AI You Should Use

The AI tool doesn't make much difference. If you can feed them a good prompt, then you can expect a better response. However, different AIs have their few unique potential.

  • Chat GPT is the most popular AI and is famous for doing almost every kind of task. If you want to improve or generate some local language phrases, then it is the most powerful tool.

  • Gemini by Google is another powerful tool and works great with the Google ecosystem. If you are relying too much on Google Flights, Google Maps, and similar, then it can be a great tool. You should use this tool for finding and knowing the flight details or price.
  • Perplexity AI is a great tool and works great with real-time data search. Suppose you are travelling to some place, so you should use this tool to collect the reviews about that place. Perplexity collects all the reviews from personal blog channels, Reddit or similar forums.

Group A - Itineraries and Day Plans

1. Country Specific Itinerary

Prompt: You are a professional travel planner. Create a [NUMBER]-day travel itinerary for [COUNTRY]. Include day-by-day activities, cultural highlights, food recommendations, and estimated costs in USD. Write in a clear and conversational tone. Format the output as a table with columns: Day, Activities, Food, Cost. Keep each day under 150 words.

This will create a detailed guide in tabular form for your desired country and number of days plan. Don't forget to replace the [number] with the number of days you want to travel, and [country] with your destination country.

2. 7 Day Balanced itinerary

Prompt: Act as an experienced travel planner. Create a 7-day itinerary for [DESTINATION] from [START_DATE] to [END_DATE] for a [TRAVELER_TYPE: solo/family/couple] who likes [INTERESTS: food, history, hiking]. For each day list morning/afternoon/evening activities, estimated duration, transit method and time between spots, addresses, and a rough cost estimate per activity. Format as a day-by-day table.

Use this prompt to create a detailed day-by-day schedule with your own schedule and travel times. You can use this to create a family, solo or group plan. Keep in mind to change the word or phrase like [DESTINATION] with your preferred one.

3. Budget Friendly Travel Plan

Prompt: You are travelling for 5+ years in a budget-friendly way. Now plan a [NUMBER]-day trip to [COUNTRY OR CITY] with a total budget of around $[AMOUNT]. Include day-by-day activities, meals, and local accommodations within the budget. Present the plan in a table with columns: Day, Activity, Food, Transport, Accommodation, and Daily Cost.

Use the above to create within budget plan, like $3000 for 5 days in Nepal. This will give you a clear table with popular destinations of places like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, that is possible to cover within 5 days while not going out of your budget.

Group B - Logistics, Transport, and Bookings

4. Airport to City Transport Guide

Prompt: List the top 4 ways to get from [AIRPORT_NAME] to [DESTINATION_CITY_CENTER]: public transit, shuttle, taxi, rideshare. For each include travel time, typical price range, where to find the stop/pickup, and booking tips.

5. Local Transportation Guide

Provide approximate costs, time efficiency, and comfort levels for each option. Summarize the best option for short stays and budget travelers. Format in bullet points.

To find out the most efficient way to roam around the city while being cost-effective. The above prompt will give you the best option with the point describing why best.

6. Full Booking Assistance [Flight + Hotel + Transport]

Prompt: You are a complete travel receptionist. Plan my trip from [DEPARTURE CITY] to [DESTINATION]. Include best flight options, recommended hotels (3 choices: budget, mid-range, luxury), and local transport suggestions (metro, taxis, rentals). Present the results in three sections: Flights, Hotels, Transport. Add estimated total cost for 5 days in USD.

Group C - Money & planning

7. Cost Saving Suggestions

Prompt: You are a seasoned traveler who has personally explored [DESTINATION], or a local expert from [DESTINATION]. Provide 10 practical ways to reduce travel costs without missing the major sights. Include local tips, apps, or hacks where relevant. Present the results in a numbered list, with each point in 2-3 sentences explaining the tip and why it helps save money.

This will provide you with suggestions as you get tips from any local travelers. The result will give you budget budget-friendly tour without missing the appealing or most visiting sights of that area.

Prompt: You are a local resident of [DESTINATION] who knows the city inside out. Estimate a daily budget for a [TRAVELER_TYPE] with a [BUDGET_LEVEL] approach. Break down costs into accommodation, food, transport, activities, and a 10% emergency buffer. Present the results in a table with columns: Category, Daily Cost (USD), Notes, and include one insider tip for saving money while enjoying the city.

This is one of my favorite prompts, which I use frequently, as it gives me a roughly estimation for my travel budget. Even the rough budget estimation is too close, if you follow the things or spend money only on the listed things.

Group D - Packing, Weather, and Health

9. Weather + Outfit Planner

Prompt: You have spent 12 months living in [DESTINATION] and know the weather and seasonal patterns for every month. For travel dates [DATES], create a 7-day weather-aware outfit planner. If you are not sure what to pack for your destination, for your visiting date, and don't know the weather, then the above prompt can give you a detailed guide. For example, you can change the [DESTINATION] with a place like Thailand to know what to wear in Thailand.

10. Health and Vacation Checklist

Prompt: Act like a travel doctor who regularly advises international travelers. List the health precautions and recommended vaccines before visiting [DESTINATION]. Include essential first-aid items and advice on finding an English-speaking clinic. Present the information in a table with columns: Health Measure, Purpose, Notes. Add one tip for staying healthy while abroad.

Get insight into the medical and health essentials that you need to take or pack before visiting your destination. Like visiting a cold place, the common cold will be common, so will suggest you pack those related medicines or vaccines.

!Alert: AI suggestions are for reference only. Always consult your doctor before taking any medical action or making final decisions.

Guide to Write Best Prompt

You don't need to memorize all the prompts. You need to understand the 3-section writing rule for a prompt, and you can write any prompt easily.

The three sections include Role, Context and Output.

  • Role: If you have gone through all the above prompts carefully, you may see that in every prompt I have included, like 'you have travelled [DESTINATION] for years' or 'act like a local traveler', this is the role that gives the context to the AI on how they should act and provide the result in that way.

  • Context: This is the main section. Mainly, general users use it to give context to the AI. It includes what you actually want the AI to do, like 'create travel plan,' but make sure to provide clear and detailed context.
  • Output: Next is the output or result, which includes how you want the result, such as in .pdf, docs, or Excel or a similar way.

Wrapping Up

Keep in mind, the best prompt doesn't mean it always needs to be longer. Even short prompts with clear context and, defined role will give you more detailed output compared to undefined longer prompts.

For travellers, always include the destination name and define the role to have more helpful results. In role you can consist of things like 'you are travelling Nepal for 10 years' or 'act like a travel expert' or similar.
