My Colorful Experience in Buddhist Monastery of Chiang Mai, Thailand
Last Updated: May 06, 2025
TweetHi, I am Kay from Germany. I still cannot believe I am here in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in this beautiful Buddhist monastery. When I decided to volunteer, I thought I would only help with small tasks. But it became much more.
When I arrived, I immediately saw colors and traditions everywhere. One day, I joined a ceremony with big red umbrellas and golden temple spires behind us. The air smelled like flowers and incense. Everyone lit candles together, so many candles, glowing like little stars. Monks in orange robes chanted softly. Even though I did not understand the words, I felt something very strong in my heart. It felt like we were all together as one.
Another day, we entered inside the monastery, surrounded by golden statues and beautiful decorations. I had a peaceful experience of meditation Everyone made a hand gesture, crossing fingers into a heart shape. It showed gratitude and unity. I could not stop smiling because people here are so friendly. They treated me like family, even though I come from far away.

One unforgettable moment was during a festival parade. I stood on a beautiful float covered with pink and orange flowers, and there was a golden Buddha statue. The float moved through streets filled with white blossoms, and the whole town celebrated. I clapped to the music, feeling the happiness around me.
At night, I saw a traditional dance under the stars. Two dancers performed in front of the lit-up monastery, one wore a sparkling costume with big, delicate wings, the other dressed like a mythical creature with a golden mask. Their movements were graceful, like something from another world. Flower petals covered the ground, and everyone cheered. I felt like I was in a dream.
On another day, we gathered at Wat Srisuphan, a silver temple with detailed carvings shining in the sun. I wore white clothes to show respect, standing with locals and monks for a photo. It made me proud to be part of their community.
One of my favorite moments was quiet. I stood in front of a small shrine with a kind woman from the monastery. Bright pink flowers surrounded us, and a small Buddha statue was on the table. She handed me a candle, and when I lit it, she smiled warmly. We did not need words to understand each other. It was a peaceful moment.
Volunteering here changed me. I thought I would just help a little and learn something about Buddhism. Instead, I have experienced a culture rich with life. I danced, prayed, laughed with new friends, and found peace. This monastery and these people have given me more than I could ever give them. I will keep these memories forever.
Thanks a lot for this memorable experience!
