How to Help the People Affected by Gen Z Protest in Nepal

The Gen Z protests that erupted across Nepal on September 8, 2025, were not just a cry for reform, they marked one of the most intense and tragic moments in recent Nepali history. Sparked by the government’s abrupt decision to ban social media platforms, and further fueled by years of frustration over unchecked corruption and nepotism (“Nepo Kids”), the protests quickly turned from peaceful demonstrations into a nationwide crisis.

In what began as a youth-led campaign echoing movements in other countries like Indonesia, young Nepalis took to the streets demanding transparency, justice, and freedom of expression. However, the scale of violence that followed shocked the nation. Fires engulfed government buildings, lives were lost, and hundreds were injured. Now, as the dust is prayed to settle, the urgent need is not just political reform, but healing and support for the people affected.

How is the situation now?

The aftermath of the protests has left the country in a state of deep distress. With 34 confirmed dead and more than 400 injured, the scale of human suffering is unprecedented for a single protest in Nepal. What began as peaceful resistance by the youth turned catastrophic when tensions escalated. Government institutions were attacked, Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, the President’s Office at Sheetal Niwas, the Supreme Court, Parliament, and the main administrative complex, Singha Durbar, were all set ablaze by angry protestors.

These violent escalations followed widespread public outrage at the government's crackdown on digital freedoms and its failure to address growing corruption. While political leaders and parties voiced support for the Gen Z movement, the resulting chaos has devastated hundreds of families and disrupted essential services. Now, the country needs coordinated humanitarian efforts to aid those affected.

Who is helping?

Red Cross

The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) has been on the frontlines, offering emergency aid to the injured during and after the protests. As a neutral humanitarian organization, NRCS emphasizes that its services are not influenced by politics, race, religion, or ideology. They have made a public plea to all citizens to protect their ambulances and volunteers, so that they can safely reach and assist those in need. In times of violence, safeguarding medical responders becomes just as critical as treating the wounded.

UNICEF

UNICEF has mobilized its resources to identify children directly affected by the protests. With reports of minors hospitalized in Kathmandu and other areas, UNICEF’s teams are collecting and verifying critical data to ensure no child is left behind. Plans are underway to dispatch trained psychosocial counselors to help children cope with grief, trauma, and stress, providing emotional first aid to the youngest victims of this national tragedy.

Save the Children

Save the Children has issued strong calls for the Nepali authorities to show restraint in the use of force, particularly in the presence of minors. The organization has raised concerns over the deaths of at least 19 individuals during the protests, including children. They are urging the government to uphold its obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and safeguard the rights of young people to peaceful expression. With children caught in the crossfire, ensuring their safety and dignity is of paramount importance.

Conclusion

In moments of national crisis, solidarity becomes the most powerful tool for recovery. As Nepal grapples with the fallout from the Gen Z protest, every citizen, organization, and ally has a role to play. Whether it’s offering donations to trusted humanitarian groups, advocating for peaceful dialogue, or simply sharing verified information, every action counts.

The road ahead will require compassion, clarity, and courage. While the political questions raised by the youth must be addressed, the humanitarian need is immediate. Now is the time to come together, not just to heal wounds, but to build a Nepal that listens, learns, and leads with empathy.
