How to Help Thailand and Myanmar Earthquake Victims

The devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake has shaken Thailand and Myanmar, causing immense destruction and suffering. In Bangkok, Thailand, the quake led to the collapse of a skyscraper under construction, leaving dozens trapped and at least three confirmed dead, while hundreds more casualties are feared across Myanmar. The immediate aftermath saw chaos as panicked residents and tourists crowded streets, fearing aftershocks and further structural collapses.

Rescue operations continue into the night in Bangkok, where Thai authorities are diligently working to save trapped victims. Meanwhile, in Myanmar, electricity and internet outages have hampered relief efforts, worsening an already critical humanitarian situation. As international attention turns towards aiding survivors, global solidarity is crucial to addressing urgent needs.

How is the situation now?

The earthquake severely impacted Myanmar and neighboring Thailand, claiming almost 1,000 lives so far, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and widespread disruption. In Myanmar, cities including Mandalay, Sagaing, Naypyitaw, Bago, and Southern Shan experienced significant destruction. Communication remains disrupted, hindering rescue and relief efforts. In Bangkok, a massive rescue operation continues through the darkness as emergency crews search for the 81 workers trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed skyscraper.

Who is helping?

Here is the breakdown of who is currently lending the helpful hands to the victims and survivors of this disaster:

Red Cross

The Myanmar Red Cross Society has quickly mobilized, deploying response teams primarily to Mandalay. The Red Cross is currently providing first aid and assessing further needs. Due to infrastructure damage, their task is complicated by widespread electricity and internet outages, making their presence critical in delivering immediate assistance.

European Union

EU leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, have extended support to earthquake victims. Europe's Copernicus satellite system is actively assisting first responders, providing detailed assessments of damage that guide rescue and relief operations, significantly enhancing the effectiveness of on-the-ground efforts.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF)

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams in Myanmar and Thailand are safe and accounted for following the powerful earthquake and are fully prepared to respond at scale to assist affected communities. MSF emphasizes the urgent need for swift and unhindered access to impacted regions to conduct assessments and deliver emergency medical care, particularly trauma treatment. Recognizing the earthquake's devastating potential, MSF is also deeply concerned about survivors who have lost shelter, access to health care, and safe drinking water, as this significantly increases the risk of waterborne diseases. Currently, MSF's priority is to quickly deploy assessment teams and ideally an emergency trauma care team, once access is secured.

Myanmar’s Military Junta

In an unusual move reflecting the severity of the crisis, Myanmar’s military junta has formally requested international humanitarian assistance. Domestically overwhelmed, they are conducting rescue operations and providing essential humanitarian support, signaling a rare openness to external aid amid the ongoing political turmoil.

Thailand’s Government

Thailand’s government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has declared Bangkok an emergency zone and is spearheading rescue operations. Emergency teams utilize drones and search dogs at the collapsed skyscraper site, prioritizing the urgent task of locating and rescuing survivors trapped beneath the debris.

CARE International

CARE International is actively working alongside local partners in Myanmar and Thailand, providing urgent humanitarian aid. Their presence ensures that essential relief, such as medical aid, food, and water, quickly reaches affected communities.

How can you help?

If you are feeling about the people affected by this incident and looking to help those in needs. Here is how you can help:

Donate to Relief Organizations:

You can support immediate relief efforts by donating to key humanitarian organizations such as the Myanmar Red Cross and International Red Cross/Red Crescent through IFRC or the Thai Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), CARE International , and the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) at unocha.org to facilitate broader humanitarian coordination.

Support Local Efforts via Crowdfunding:

Explore verified campaigns on platforms like GoFundMe dedicated explicitly to earthquake victims in Thailand and Myanmar. Verify fundraisers to ensure authenticity and that donations reach legitimate organizations or individuals.

Raise Awareness:

Use your platforms to amplify verified information from reputable sources, such as Red Cross, WHO, AP, or Reuters. Highlight urgent issues like Myanmar's current blood shortages to mobilize further assistance.

Conclusion

The earthquake crisis in Thailand and Myanmar requires immediate global attention and action. Your support, whether through donations, raising awareness, or supporting local initiatives, is crucial in alleviating suffering and aiding the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts. Together, we can provide meaningful help to those desperately in need.
