How to Help Flood Victims in Kathmandu and Nepal

Floods and landslides have devastated large parts of Nepal, claiming 66 lives and causing widespread destruction across the country. Heavy rains that began on Friday have triggered this disaster, impacting Kathmandu Valley, Bagmati, Koshi, and other provinces. As rescue teams race against time, many people remain missing, with 79 unaccounted for, and thousands have been displaced. In Koshi province alone, 152 houses were damaged, while rescue teams have been mobilized to assist people in affected regions. The Armed Police Force has deployed 23 boats and divers across 90 locations, working tirelessly to save lives and mitigate further losses.

In this time of crisis, local and international organizations are stepping up their efforts to provide relief. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has activated its Early Action Protocol to support evacuation efforts and distribute hygiene kits to those in need. With homes destroyed and people vulnerable to health risks, the situation in Nepal demands urgent attention and assistance.

How is the situation now?

Currently, the situation in Nepal remains dire, with rescue operations ongoing in many regions. Flooding and landslides have caused significant loss of life and property, with 66 people confirmed dead and 79 still missing. The most affected areas include Kathmandu Valley, where 34 people have been injured, and thousands have been rescued from dangerous situations. Bagmati and Koshi provinces are among the hardest hit, with widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.

As the rains subside, the focus has shifted to providing shelter, medical assistance, and basic necessities to the survivors. Thousands of families are displaced, and rescue teams, along with humanitarian organizations, are working day and night to bring relief to the affected areas. However, with so many people still missing and infrastructure severely damaged, the recovery process will be long and challenging.

Who is helping?

Red Cross (IFRC)

The Nepal Red Cross Society, in coordination with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has been one of the leading organizations providing relief. Their Early Action Protocol for floods was activated immediately following the heavy rains. They have been instrumental in supporting evacuations, raising awareness on health risks, distributing hygiene kits, and implementing child protection measures. Their collaboration with local branches and the Emergency Operations Centre has ensured coordinated efforts across the affected regions.

Government Departments

The Nepalese government, through various departments such as the Armed Police Force and disaster management agencies, has mobilized resources and rescue teams. Armed Police have deployed boats and divers to conduct search and rescue missions across 90 locations, particularly in the most affected areas like Kathmandu Valley and Bagmati Province. Their efforts have led to the rescue of over 2,000 people. Additionally, local authorities are working to assess the damage, restore essential services, and provide temporary shelters for those displaced by the disaster.
